St. John’s Seng is a Chinese herbal formula used for depression, forgetfulness, palpitations, anxiety, phobia (fear) and nervous exhaustion.
St. John’s Seng may also be used for neuropathy, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, chronic viral syndromes
St. John’s Seng is a combination of the traditional formula Gui Pi Tang (Ginseng & Longan) with the antidepressant and antiviral herb St. John’s Wort. St. John’s Wort has been shown in several double blind studies to treat mild to moderate depression. In Chinese medicine St. John’s Wort is a heat clearing and blood-invigorating herb. The remaining herbs build Qi and blood, and brighten the spirit. Ginseng (ren shen) helps the body adapt to stress and strongly tonifies the spleen. Astragalus (huang qi) has antiviral properties, tonifies the spleen and potentates Tang kuei (dang gui) to strongly tonify blood. Zizyphus, polygala, and fu shen calm the spirit. The remaining herbs white atractylodes (bai zhu) and vladimiria souliei (mu xiang) help rid the body of dampness and prevent indigestion caused by the other herbs. Red date (da zao) harmonize and build blood.
As a whole this formula is for restless heart spirit, Qi and blood deficiency and helps the spleen control blood which is necessary with excessive bleeding. Herbalist Andrew Gaeddert added two herbs albizzia (he huan pi) whose English translation is “happiness bark” and salvia (dan shen) which is traditionally used to clear heat and for irritability, palpitations and insomnia.
